OHR in Conversation...highlights civil rights people, spaces, and places in Prince George's County. On June 29th, we welcome District 22 Delegate Ashanti Martinez!
Join us as we talk to Delegate Martinez about his journey, what it means to be a young man in politics, his advocacy and activism, and how his story opens doors and opportunities for others. Ashanti Martinez is a Maryland State Delegate representing District 22 in Prince George’s County and serves as House Majority Whip in the Maryland House of Delegates.
A son of Prince George’s County currently living in New Carrollton, he attended St. Mary’s Landover Hills School before graduating from Parkdale High School and later attending Howard University. Before his appointment to the General Assembly, Martinez built a career in public service and community advocacy. He worked for the Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus in Annapolis, the Prince George’s County Council, and served as a policy analyst for CASA, focusing on immigrant, worker, and family protections. He now represents District 22 in the Maryland House of Delegates, where his work centers on public health, economic stability, and community safety.
Delegate Martinez serves on the board of Us Helping Us, People Into Living, Inc., supporting HIV prevention, health services, and community wellness initiatives. In the legislature, he serves on the Health Committee and is an active member of the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, Legislative Black Caucus, and Legislative Latino Caucus where he is Chair. He has been recognized as a 93.9 WKYS “Top 30 Under 30,” a Prince George’s County Social Innovation Fund “Forty Under 40” honoree, and one of The Root’s “Young Futurists.” He was also named a Maryland Daily Record “Top 40 Under 40 VIP” and Prince George’s County Community Advocate of the Year by the Neighborhood Design Center.
